Challenge: Investigate Your Horse’s Nutritional Needs

Goal: Gain insight into your horse’s diet by answering questions about their diet and nutritional needs. Progress through levels of investigation based on your knowledge and ability.


Level 1: Basic Questions

  1. What Does Your Horse Eat?
    • List all the components of their diet (e.g., hay, grain, supplements, treats).
  2. How Much Do They Eat?
    • Estimate the amount of hay and grain they receive daily.
    • Can you hold or push the entire amount that is consumed in 1 day?
  3. What Are The Horses Water Needs?
    • How much water do they need?
    • Where can the find it?
    • Why is water important?
    • Can you pick up 5 gallons of water?

Level 2: Intermediate Questions

  1. What is Your Horse’s Body Condition Score (BCS)?
  2. What Type of Forage Do They Eat?
  3. Is Their Diet Balanced?
    • Are they receiving enough energy, fiber, and essential nutrients for their workload and health status? Do you feel like their diet needs any adjustments?

Level 3: Advanced Questions

  1. What Are Your Horse’s Unique Nutritional Needs?
    • Consider factors like age, workload, weight, or any health conditions (e.g., metabolic issues, ulcers).
  2. What Is the Nutritional Analysis of Their Feed?
    • Investigate feed labels and test hay to understand protein, fiber, and mineral content.
  3. Do Supplements Support Their Needs?
    • Review any supplements they’re receiving to determine if they’re necessary or redundant.
